Key Features:

First-Ever Green Ammonia Tender by SECI:
This marks the first time that SECI has issued a dedicated tender for green ammonia procurement in India. It shows the government's shift from pilot hydrogen projects to large-scale industrial applications. This step helps bridge the policy gap between green hydrogen production and its commercial industrial use.
Capacity Target of 200 MW (Electrolyser-Based Hydrogen):
The tender will support projects equivalent to 200 megawatts of electrolyser capacity, which will be used to produce green hydrogen through water electrolysis using renewable energy sources (like solar and wind). This hydrogen will then be synthesized into green ammonia.
Decarbonising the Fertiliser Sector:
India’s fertiliser industry is heavily dependent on natural gas to produce grey ammonia. This tender is a strategic move to cut CO₂ emissions in one of the country’s largest industrial GHG contributors. Green ammonia will replace fossil fuel-based feedstock in urea and other fertiliser production.
Public–Private Participation Enabled:
The tender is open to both public and private fertiliser plants, promoting a competitive ecosystem for low-carbon industrial transition. This encourages major private sector participation alongside PSU companies like RCF and NFL.
Integration with National Green Hydrogen Mission:
The initiative supports the National Green Hydrogen Mission’s target of producing 5 MMT (million metric tonnes) of green hydrogen annually by 2030. The tender will also feed into India’s export competitiveness in green fuels like ammonia and methanol.
Technological and Infrastructure Push:
This tender will boost demand for electrolysers, water purification systems, hydrogen storage, and ammonia conversion facilities. It is expected to catalyse industrial investments and R&D in the green hydrogen value chain.
Long-Term Offtake Assurance:
The tender assures long-term purchase agreements for the produced ammonia, providing financial certainty to developers. This mitigates risks and makes green hydrogen projects more bankable, encouraging private capital infusion.
Supports India’s Global Climate Commitments:
By reducing dependency on grey ammonia, the tender is aligned with India’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the net-zero by 2070 target. It also strengthens India’s image as a leader in climate-resilient industrial transformation.
